The United Nations has a central role to play in implementing the 2030 Agenda. This requires adequate and predictable financial contributions from public sources. Independent monitoring and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its structural obstacles and challenges are key factors for the success of the SDGs. The Reflection Group on the 2030 agenda will assess funding patterns and their implications, especially with regard to the growing influence of the corporate sector and corporate philanthropy.
This first report, released on 11 July at a side event during the High level political forum on sustainable development, puts a spotlight on the fulfilment of the 17 goals, with a particular focus on inequalities, responsibility of the rich and powerful, means of implementation and systemic issues.
PSI is a partner of this Reflection Group and has contributed (substantially) to the report, working closely with the partner organisations throughout the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) negotiations and Financing for Development (FFD) work. All organisations in the project highlight the need for strong public governance, investment in public goods and public services.
This 200-page document will be helpful to public sector unions and civil society organisations in thinking critically about the SDGs. To some extent it is the perfect complement to a more practical manual on what the SDGs are and how they can be used (and abused) at national level.
